If you seek a U.P. diner...

                                                 MT. SHASTA RESTAURANT, Michigamme, Michigan

-Self-made postcard by the photographer, 2010

Liver and onions, hot roast beef sandwiches, grilled salmon, and chili are just some of the
classic comfort food on the menu at Mt. Shasta, located east of Michigamme, Michigan on
U.S. Highway 41.

Chicagoan Nancy Ferro, a veteran of the food service industry, bought this landmark log
restaurant/bar and brought it back from a derelict state to become a popular eatery in the
Lake Michigamme region, west of Marquette.

Mt. Shasta has a colorful history, as it started out as an Ishpeming-area dance hall in 1936.
The restaurant made a cameo appearance in the 1959 film Anatomy of a Murder, which was
shot on location in the area.  Enlargements of production photos still grace the walls of the
restaurant.

There is a good brief history of Mt. Shasta Restaurant in Hunt's Guide to Michigan's Upper
Peninsula.  Scroll down the Home Page to the tab on the right:  Places Around Michigamme
to Eat.  Mt. Shasta Restaurant is right under the tab, and is itself a link.  Click on and go to
Mt. Shasta's own page!

Read all about Mt. Shasta Restaurant and find information about their specials, and their
winter hours.  Mmm... comfort food!

If you seek a Speed-E-Postcard...

Postcard of the Mackinac Bridge with Nancy and John, September 4, 2011.

Kalamazoo friends John and Nancy were up north recently, and stopped in at
Indian Village in St. Ignace.  Amidst the souvenirs and artifacts sits a little stuffed
bear in a box, outfitted with a motion sensor.   As you walk by, he asks, "Would you
like to have your picture taken?"

You can choose from several background scenes and click! your picture is captured on
your very own customized postcard (2/$5.00).

They said that the bear wastes no time snapping the pictures, so you have to hurry to
compose yourselves in front of the camera!

If you seek a feel-good movie...

GOOGLE ME THE MOVIE, by Jim Killeen, 2007.
-Postcard designed by the filmmaker's mother,
and sent out as a party invitation, 2009.

A priest, a swinger, and an actor walk into a Texas bar...

Sounds like the opening line of a joke, but the story is true.  That unlikely trio
was joined by four others-- all named JIM KILLEEN.

Jim Killeen, born and raised in Birmingham, Michigan, studied theater at Wayne
State, and moved to California to pursue his dream of a film career.  He soon
found himself to be just another out-of-work actor living in Los Angeles.

One night, everything changed when he hatched the idea for a documentary film.
"It all started when I Googled my name... " is the opening salvo for his independent
film, Google Me The Movie.

Jim Killeen Googled six other Jim Killeens, and not only contacted them by phone,
but sought them out on their home turf.  With a film crew in tow, Jim traveled to
Ireland, Scotland, Australia, and all over the United States.  But that's not all folks...

He invited the Jims to join him in Killeen, Texas, for the city's centennial celebration,
and flew them all there, expenses paid.  Not bad for an out-of-work-actor-turned-filmmaker!

They took part in a chili cook-off, went to a rodeo, and were honored by the mayor, who
proclaimed a "Jim Killeen Day".  Now, about that Texas bar...

Google Me The Movie is a funny, serious, and often moving account of the lives of the
Jim Killeens-- what they share, what is unique to each, what is their philosophy of life,
and what makes them happy.  DNA testing was done to find out if they were actually
related to one another.  The results were interesting...

Watch for filmed segments on location in Beverly Hills, Michigan, and East Lansing.

If you seek Saarinen's genius...

SAARINEN HOUSE WINDOW (1928-1930), Eliel Saarinen, Architect (1873-1950)
Photograph:  Andrea Eis;  Postcard Design:  Catherine Schrenker

In 1922, Finnish architect Eliel Sarrinen entered a competition to design the Tribune Tower
in Chicago.  He came in second.  With the money for second prize, Saarinen was able to
establish himself in the Chicago area, and bring his wife and children over from Finland to
settle in the United States.

If Eliel Saarinen had won that competition, he would have never accepted a teaching post
at the University of Michigan, or met art patrons George Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps
Booth.  Chicago's loss was Michigan's gain.

The Booths invited Saarinen to design an educational community on the site of an old farm
in Bloomfield Hills.  Designed in 1925, Saarinen's buildings and beautiful 300-acre campus
was named "Cranbrook".  It is home to the Cranbrook Art Academy, Art Museum, Science
Institute, and private schools for girls and boys.

Visit the Saarinen House, the home Saarinen designed and built as the family residence.  It is
a classic example of the Arts and Crafts Style, where architecture and interior design converge
into one vision for the perfect living environment-- Saarinen's vision, Saarinen's genius.

Don't miss the surrounding gardens!

An exquisite guide to the Saarinen House is presented in PDF form:

If you seek a glass of wine...

Main Street, Paw Paw, Michigan, 1906, (note electric utility and telephone poles).

Paw Paw is the County Seat of Van Buren County.  This beautiful region is often referred to as
"Michigan's Fruit Basket", and is replete with roadside produce stands in the summer and fall.

Grapes have been grown in this area since the 1860s.  Paw Paw is home to the oldest winery
in Michigan-- the St. Julian Wine Company.  The Meconi family from Italy started making wine
in the "new world" in 1921, and established the company in 1936.  St. Julian's is one of the 40
largest wineries in the United States.

If you seek a chicken dinner...

    CHICKEN CHARLIE'S, INC.
                                                                Kalamazoo, Michigan
                                                            Your Host-- Charles Schwarz
One of Michigan's most outstanding restaurants
CHICKEN - STEAKS - SEA FOOD
                                                                       Air-Conditioned
More than an acre of paved parking space

Sorry!  Restaurant closed.  Chicken Charlie's was a restaurant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that
was popular with families in the 1950s.  It was located on the corner of Whites Road and South
Westnedge Avenue.

Chicken Charlie's had memorable cole slaw-- sweet, tangy, and very finely shredded.

The restaurant decor featured "picture windows" that were actually huge blow-up photos of exotic locales such as Cypress Gardens.  They were set into the wood-paneled wall complete with recessed lighting.  Click on the card to enlarge it and you will see one of these windows.

This postcard is a Genuine Curteich-Chicago "C.T. Art-Colortone" Post Card,  c. 1952.

In case you are waxing nostalgic about some favorite spots in Kalamazoo that are no longer around...

Oh, sound the call
To dear old Interlochen,
Land of the stately pine.
Where stalwart hands
And Loyal ever greet thee,
Faithful for Auld Lang Syne.
Old friends you'll meet,
New ones you'll greet,
A welcome you'll ever find.
So sound the call
To dear old Interlochen,
Shrine of the muse divine.
